Scripture reminds us that trials are a part of life. We are encouraged to take heart because Christ has overcome the world. Although we may wish to avoid hardship, it is often through these challenges that we witness God’s power most clearly. In Mark 4:39, Jesus calms the storm with the words, “Peace, be still,” demonstrating His authority over chaos. Likewise, in Matthew 7, Jesus teaches that a life built on a firm foundation will withstand storms because it is grounded on the rock.
Since we cannot prevent many difficulties from occurring, the question becomes, how do we respond to them. The answer lies in trusting God with our circumstances and being intentional about how we navigate them. This is what it means to work from the inside out.
Our internal dialogue plays a significant role in determining whether we experience peace or distress during difficult seasons. Working from the inside out requires awareness of what we are telling ourselves. Are our thoughts discouraging and self-defeating, or are they grounded in truth and hope? Instead of adopting a victim mindset, we can remind ourselves that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. When anxiety arises, we can affirm that God is with us and that we are safe. If we are tempted to take responsibility for circumstances beyond our control, we can acknowledge that not everything is our fault. And when concern about others’ opinions creeps in, we can remember that we are not responsible for their thoughts or judgments.
Finally, working from the inside out involves intentional self-care—drawing closer to the Lord, setting healthy boundaries, allowing ourselves adequate rest, and staying connected with others. These are things within our control. While the struggle may be real, we are not required to navigate it perfectly. We are simply called to rely on God and move forward with intentionality.
